Reliable off grid refrigeration changes what is practical to take with you, whether you are heading away for a single night in the Peak District or spending a week touring Scotland in your 4x4, car or van.
A compressor fridge freezer is one of the most useful upgrades for vehicle camping because it removes the constant race against melting ice. It lets you carry proper meals, cold drinks and fresh ingredients, while giving families a safe place to store food for longer trips. The key is choosing a unit and power setup that match how you actually travel.
What makes off grid refrigeration different?
For vehicle-based camping, a compressor fridge freezer is generally the right tool for the job. Unlike a passive cool box, it actively cools its contents and can usually hold a set temperature regardless of the weather, provided it has enough power and adequate ventilation. Many units can also freeze, which is useful for ice packs, frozen meals or keeping supplies for the later stages of a trip.
This is very different from relying on ice. Ice coolers can work well for a day at the beach or a short picnic, but they need regular topping up, create water in the bottom of the box and become less effective as the weather warms. For weekends away and longer touring, a compressor fridge gives far more control.
The trade-off is that you must plan for electrical consumption. A fridge freezer is not difficult to run off grid, but it should be treated as part of the wider vehicle setup rather than an accessory to plug in as an afterthought.
Choose the right fridge freezer capacity
Bigger is not always better. A large fridge gives you more room, but it takes up valuable space, weighs more when loaded and may use more power over time. The best capacity depends on how many people are travelling, how long you expect to stay away from shops and what type of food you tend to pack.
For solo travellers and couples taking short breaks, a compact unit can hold a sensible mix of chilled food and drinks without dominating the boot. Families, or anyone travelling for several days at a time, may prefer a larger chest-style fridge freezer. If you want to freeze food as well as chill it, consider whether a dual-zone model is worth the extra space and energy use.
Before choosing, measure the usable space in your vehicle, including the height available when the lid is open. Think about how the fridge will be accessed when your roof tent is deployed or when the awning is up. A unit buried behind bags, cooking kit and muddy boots will soon become frustrating.

Powering off grid refrigeration properly
The fridge’s listed wattage does not tell the full story. Compressor fridges cycle on and off, so actual consumption varies with ambient temperature, the set temperature, how often the lid is opened and how full the fridge is. A fridge working hard in direct summer sun will use notably more power than the same unit in shade on a mild evening.
For a simple weekend setup, a quality portable power station may be enough, especially if the fridge is pre-chilled before departure and connected to the vehicle’s 12V socket while driving. For regular trips or longer stays off grid, a dedicated leisure battery is usually the more dependable option.
A useful setup often includes a leisure battery, a suitable DC-DC charger to charge it while driving, and solar charging for time spent parked. The right battery size depends on your fridge, other electrical loads and the number of days you want to remain stationary. Lighting, phone charging, water pumps, diesel heaters and cooking appliances all need to be included in the calculation.
Lithium batteries offer useful capacity at a lower weight and can be discharged more deeply than many lead-acid alternatives, but they cost more initially. AGM batteries remain a viable choice for lighter-use setups with a tighter budget. There is no single best answer - a family who camps for long weekends will have different needs from someone building a vehicle for extended remote travel.
Start with a realistic energy budget
Look at the fridge manufacturer’s typical daily consumption, then allow a margin for warm weather and real-world use. Add up the expected demand from every device you will run overnight. This gives you a far better basis for choosing a battery and solar panel than selecting the largest numbers you can afford.
Do not depend on a vehicle starter battery for overnight refrigeration. Many compressor fridges include low-voltage protection, which helps prevent a flat starter battery, but it is not a substitute for a proper auxiliary power system. The last thing you want is a cold fridge and a vehicle that will not start on the morning you need to leave.
Make the fridge work less hard
Good habits make a noticeable difference to battery life. Pre-chill the fridge at home before loading it, and put cold food into it rather than expecting it to chill a week’s shopping from warm. Keep the lid closed as much as possible and avoid standing the unit in direct sunshine.
Ventilation matters too. The compressor needs space to shed heat, so do not pack bedding, coats or storage boxes tightly around its vents. If the fridge lives in a drawer system or enclosed vehicle area, follow the manufacturer’s clearance guidance carefully.
A fridge cover can offer protection during travel and may provide some insulation, but it should never restrict airflow around the compressor. On very hot days, shading the vehicle and using an awning as an outdoor living space can reduce the heat build-up that makes every electrical item work harder.
Pack food for access, not just capacity
A well-packed fridge uses less energy and makes camp life easier. Keep regularly used items near the top: milk, breakfast food, snacks and ingredients for that evening’s meal. Group food in reusable containers so it does not slide around on rough tracks, and separate raw meat from ready-to-eat food.
Avoid filling every gap with loose cans and bottles. Cold items help each other stay cool, but you still need enough room to find what you need without holding the lid open for several minutes. If you are carrying a mix of chilled and frozen food in a single-zone unit, plan your menu so frozen items are used early or keep them in a separate insulated bag with ice packs.
For families, a simple meal plan can reduce the required fridge size as much as any clever packing trick. Take the ingredients you will genuinely use, rather than loading the fridge with options that return home untouched.
Secure it for the journey
A loaded fridge freezer is heavy, and it must be secured before driving. Use appropriate tie-down straps, anchor points or a purpose-built slide system suited to your vehicle and fridge. It should not be able to move under braking, cornering or while travelling over uneven ground.
Check the 12V cable cannot be pinched by seats, tailgates or storage drawers. If the unit is in the boot, ensure it can be reached safely without climbing into the vehicle with hot pans or muddy footwear. Small details such as a clear route for the power lead and a stable place to set the lid open make a big difference once camp is established.
